The Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Housing Corporation provides
comprehensive social support services for senior citizens through its
program entitled Project Hotel Alert (PHA). This program, funded by the
City of Los Angeles Department of Aging, provides case management,
transportation, recreation and nutrition services to seniors in the
"Central City East" portion of downtown Los Angeles, often
referred to as "Skid row". Case ManagementPHA's case management services are available Monday through Friday from
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Marshal House. These free services include
assessment, information and referral, monitoring and follow-up, advocacy
for public benefits, completion of forms, and housing assistance. Nutrition ServicesProject Hotel Alert provides a full range of services to seniors. If you are 60 or older, you are qualified to get hot nutritious noontime meals on a regular weekly basis. A nutritious lunch is provided Monday through Friday at the Russ Hotel and the Ellis Hotel. The menu is approved and monitored by the city of Los Angeles Department of Aging. Excellent "catered" food
from "The Ritz Gardens" is brought in five days a week and is
served at about Noon. More than thirty menu variations rotate on a
six-week cycle. A suggested donation of $1.00 is requested to help offset
expenses.
PHA also delivers some
meals to "shut-ins" through its Meals-on-Wheels
program. Social ActivitiesIn addition to the lunch program, PHA provides other amenities for seniors such as:
TransportationWith funding from the Los Angeles Department of Aging, SRO Housing Corporation can offer Shuttle Service to People with Disabilities as well as those 65 years of age and older (California ID and proof of disability are required). This Shuttle Service is available for a variety of transportation needs including, but not limited to:
Door-to-door transportation is
available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for seniors
and persons with disabilities. Riders who wish to use a
handicap-accessible van need to pre-register and schedule their trips at
least 24 hours in advance. A nominal donation of $1.00 is requested for
each ride. Dependent upon availability, some trips may be scheduled on an
"urgent" basis. Riders can register for transportation by
contacting the PHA Transportation Coordinator at (213) 229-9686. Low-Cost HousingThe program at the Ellis Hotel was developed specifically for seniors
and provides specialized services for the "at-risk" elderly.
This single room occupancy hotel has an elevator and is
handicap-accessible. Monthly rents range from $180 for General Relief
recipients to $240 for Social Security recipients. Some of the amenities
available to residents of the Ellis Hotel include 24-hour security,
handicap-accessible bathrooms on each floor, regular coffee services,
daily newspaper, outings to cultural and sporting events, birthday
parties, etc... |
