The Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Housing Corporation provides comprehensive social support services for senior citizens through its program entitled Project Hotel Alert (PHA). This program, funded by the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging, provides case management, transportation, recreation and nutrition services to seniors in the "Central City East" portion of downtown Los Angeles, often referred to as "Skid row".

Case Management

PHA's case management services are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Marshal House. These free services include assessment, information and referral, monitoring and follow-up, advocacy for public benefits, completion of forms, and housing assistance.

Nutrition Services

Project Hotel Alert provides a full range of services to seniors. If you are 60 or older, you are qualified to get hot nutritious noontime meals on a regular weekly basis. A nutritious lunch is provided Monday through Friday at the Russ Hotel and the Ellis Hotel. The menu is approved and monitored by the city of Los Angeles Department of Aging.

Excellent "catered" food from "The Ritz Gardens" is brought in five days a week and is served at about Noon. More than thirty menu variations rotate on a six-week cycle. A suggested donation of $1.00 is requested to help offset expenses.

PHA also delivers some meals to "shut-ins" through its Meals-on-Wheels program.

Social Activities

In addition to the lunch program, PHA provides other amenities for seniors such as:
bulletGuest speakers
bulletRecreational and social activities
bulletFree tickets to sporting and cultural events
bulletOutings to museums and theme parks
bulletWeekly art workshops, etc...

With funding from the Los Angeles Department of Aging, SRO Housing Corporation can offer Shuttle Service to People with Disabilities as well as those 65 years of age and older (California ID and proof of disability are required).

This Shuttle Service is available for a variety of transportation needs including, but not limited to:
Case management appointments

Door-to-door transportation is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for seniors and persons with disabilities. Riders who wish to use a handicap-accessible van need to pre-register and schedule their trips at least 24 hours in advance. A nominal donation of $1.00 is requested for each ride. Dependent upon availability, some trips may be scheduled on an "urgent" basis. Riders can register for transportation by contacting the PHA Transportation Coordinator at (213) 229-9686.

Low-Cost Housing

The program at the Ellis Hotel was developed specifically for seniors and provides specialized services for the "at-risk" elderly. This single room occupancy hotel has an elevator and is handicap-accessible. Monthly rents range from $180 for General Relief recipients to $240 for Social Security recipients. Some of the amenities available to residents of the Ellis Hotel include 24-hour security, handicap-accessible bathrooms on each floor, regular coffee services, daily newspaper, outings to cultural and sporting events, birthday parties, etc...
